The days are cooler; the kids are back to school and we can look forward to taking part in two of the most quintessential American celebrations: Halloween and Thanksgiving.

Skyline Drive: The most dramatic displays of Autumn Foliage. The roads are packed during the weekend peak season, but the slow drive will give you plenty of time to enjoy the dramatic breathtaking colours.
Of course, you only have to look out of your window to enjoy a similar sight, if on a far smaller scale!

A very useful family discount site is www.certifikid.com which often has great deals on local events, farms etc.
Yelp is a good review web site to gauge popular opinion on local places to go, eat , shops etc. Can also search for categories i.e family friendly.
Great Falls National Park - The Virginia side and Maryland side offer different views. Often said that Maryland side easier for buggies/ wheelchairs etc as more paved paths. $5 entry or buy the USA parks yearly card and go further afield. Billy Goat trail for those who love hikes on the MD side.
Harpers Ferry National Park - West Virginia.$10 if no USA parks card. (olde worlde original American village in a magnificent setting). Day trip.
Cox's Pumkin farm - Centreville, VA. Hay rides, animals, rides, popcorn...fun for all. Fresh pressed apple juice is called Apple Cider here, so don't get too concerned at all the children drinking apple cider on tap! Plus free apples to complement their amazing kettle popcorn.
Fall festival from October 1st. Fee $$ on entry. Keep an eye on certifikid for deals.
Unites States National Arboretum - 2.2 miles from DC. Peaceful, huge setting. Bonsai & herb gardens. Dog friendly on lead. Limited openings friday - mondays. Free
