Employment: Medical Professionals

Nursing
It is possible to work as a Medical Technician without having to take any re-qualifying exams. A Medical Technician is similar to a Practice Nurse in a
GP’s surgery at home. Otherwise, a nurse who has qualified in the UK must apply to the Board of Nursing for a licence in the state where they want to work.
(Each state has a different licence). To get a licence, applicants must first have their nursing education earned outside the US evaluated by the Credentials
Evaluation Service. In states other than Maryland, this includes taking a qualifying exam and being issued with a Commission on Graduates of Foreign
Nursing Schools (CGFNS) Certificate.

Once the Board of Nursing has received the evaluation report and the CGFMS Certificate if applicable, applicants will be eligible to take the NCLEX-RN
examination for a licence. Apparently Project 2000 training in the UK makes it easier to get the licence, as it follows the US system more closely than
previous methods of training, i.e. it is more academic than practical. Pre-Project 2000 training in the UK was more practical than academic Costs:
(approximate) Credentials  Evaluation Service Report -$200; Licence Application –$50 NCLEX-RN Exam – $100.

Medical practitioners
Doctors must first be certified through the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). This involves taking a Medical Science Examination (steps 1 and 2), a Clinical Skills Assessment, and having their credentials evaluated. They will then be eligible to enter a residency or fellowship
programme.

To qualify for a licence to practice medicine, foreign medical graduates must first obtain a certificate from the ECFMG and then take step 3 of the Medical Licensing Exam, as well as satisfying the requirements of individual licensing authorities Typical Costs: Step 1 - $500; Step 2 - $500
