Teaching

For teaching posts in private schools, teachers must apply direct to the school, and it is up to the school which qualifications they will accept and whether applicants must take a re-qualifying test and be certified.
For teaching posts in state schools, applicants must be issued with a Certificate. This involves taking the National Teachers Exam (NTE), and having foreign degrees or qualifications evaluated by a Credentials Evaluation Service.

Classroom Assistant/Teaching Assistant
There is no need to take any re-qualifying exams or apply for any licences to become a Classroom Assistant.
Some state schools also have Instructional Assistants in Special Needs attached to them. Again there is no need to re-qualify, but 2 years at college or equivalent experience working with children is required.
Playgroup and nursery employment
Home childcare providers must be registered with the State Childcare Administration. For Maryland this involves attending a free three-hour Orientation Session, and obtaining 9 hours of approved training (health related and child development). Homes must comply with fire safety requirements, and they will be inspected by a Childcare Administration licensing specialist and a fire inspector.
