Nursery schools
Most private nursery schools are well equipped and many are staffed by professionally qualified teachers. Most children attend for half days although some offer an extended day programme. Children can learn numbers and letters but there is very little real instruction in reading and mathematical skills. The schools tend to work on the social skills and individual self-confidence. The classes are usually small with 1 teacher per 10 children.
There are a number of Montessori schools/nursery schools in the area, which offer a more structured learning environment, although classes are much larger.
Fees vary greatly. Some nurseries operate a co-op scheme, where parents participate as a classroom aide a few mornings per month, resulting in lower fees.
More detailed information on Nurseries is available in a separate guide available fr0m the CLO.
