TV and Radio

Television

In order to watch anything more than the basic “free to air” TV stations, you will need to sign up with a television service provider such as Comcast, Verizon, Starpower or Cox-Cable (all cable) or Direct TV (satellite). These companies will offer you packaged services at many different levels. You can get hundreds of channels but not many that you will watch!

BBC America plays endless episodes of Top Gear, Jonathan Ross and Gordon Ramsey but does also have the BBC World News and some other good programmes. BBC World offers news broadcasts each evening.
Some free to air channels show re-runs of classics such as Upstairs – Downstairs and Fawlty Towers – which our American neighbours rave about…
Newer TV channels such as WETA  UK  have Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife. Morse, Vera etc.
Public Radio.

WAMU on 88.5 FM is Washington’s quality radio talk station. They use a lot of BBC material, sometimes direct from the World Service. “Morning Edition” from 6am-10am is Washington’s version of the Today programme. “All Things Considered” from 6.30pm – 8pm is the evening equivalent.

WETA on 90.0 FM is the current affairs and classical music public radio station.

WTOP on 103.5  FM in the Washington DC area and Northern Virginia (or Virginia south of the  Beltway on 107.7 FM and in the Frederick,
Maryland  area on 103.9 FM) is the most listened to radio station in DC. It carries short snippets of CBS radio news with a lot of local material about traffic and weather conditions (very useful in adverse weather conditions). Lots of adverts.
